Everybody is familiar with the fascinating paintings of Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918). Numerous panels provide information about Gustav Klimt's relationship with the region and guide you around the lake to the villages, where the Viennese art nouveau painter spent many summers.
Klimt's Technique
1897 he founded the Vienna "Sezession", becoming its first president until 1905. Klimt's style was a compelling blend of Art Nouveau and Symbolist elements towards the turn of the century. His paintings were the core of Viennese art.
Further artists who were inspired by the idyllic landscape are:
Gustv Mahler composed in the summers of 1893-96 in Steinbach, in the "Komponierhäuschen" which had been specially built for him. Johannes Brahms and Hugo Wolff, as well as the writers Arthur Schnitzler and Hugo von Hoffmansthal were frequent visitors there.
In modern times the painter Ludwig Attersee adopted his artist's name to express his affection of the area. The pianist Friedrich Gulda as well as the composers Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Franz Wülser Möst live in this area.
For the aspiring artist there are painting classes , held by Professor Hohenwallner.
